Video interviews: what practice and preparation do I need?
A video interview is the next best thing to a face-to-face meeting. Here are the tips you need to make a great on-screen impression and secure that perfect new job.
Do your homework
Read the job brief carefully and carry out research on the company just as you would for an in-person interview. Test your internet connection prior to the interview and make sure you understand what you need to do to access the meeting. Check your webcam and make sure that the microphone isn’t on mute.
Stage your appearance
Think about what is immediately behind you when you make the call (a plain background is best) and adjust the light source so your face is well-lit. Dress smartly and professionally, avoiding over-bright colours. Don’t sit too far away or too close to the screen. Make sure your phone is on mute and close doors and windows to avoid any other noisy distractions.
Make a good impression
Looking straight ahead at the camera is the closest thing to making eye contact with the interviewer. Don’t forget to nod and smile as you listen to them talk. At the end of the interview, send a follow-up email thanking the employer for their time.
