How To Get A New Job In 5 Easy Steps
So, you’re sitting at your desk today and you’re thinking that you shouldn’t be. You are doing an amazing job, but you are underappreciated, not being offered the right type of training to progress and develop, or just flat out being underpaid. The last few months here at Crux have really highlighted to us how some companies are paying really low numbers compared to others, but the people there have been there for so long that they don’t know any different!
The decision is made – but where do you start? We are going to talk you through how to get that new job, and put yourself in the right place for you.
1. Preparing your CV – you will most likely have a CV of some description. It may be a few years out of date, or you may have been keeping it up to date in preparation for the decision to move. There used to be a well-known guideline to keep your CV under 2 pages of A4. This is an out-dated notion, but at the same time you don’t want to be preparing War and Peace. Remember that the person reading it wants quick access to the salient facts – so write on there about your billings, your conversion rate on valuations and your key achievements. Don’t over-egg the pudding and remember that any figures you quote could be asked about in an interview, so make sure that you know everything that you have had to look up verbatim.
2. Having your CV go to potential new employers – probably the hardest bit of the whole process, and the part where we can help you out. Have a think about the reasons why you are leaving and write them down. It’s all well and good knowing the companies that you think you want to work for, but we know the pitfalls of businesses and how their perceptions can differ from reality. Some of our best placements have been placing candidates into companies that they thought would never be for them because they perceive them incorrectly. We will send you out to companies who will suit what you are after as well as addressing and eradicating the current negatives.
3. Preparing for an interview – a daunting thing, but you are a professional. Focus on the things that you are in control of and make sure that you handle them well. Plan your route to make sure that you are there on time, make sure that your clothes are ironed and your shoes look great. Make sure that your hair is in place, and if you are male, that your facial hair is either presentable or shaven off cleanly. Remember that the impression you make in the first 30 seconds will make or break the rest of the interview.
4. The interview – people often ask me for my best advice on how to handle themselves in an interview, and I always tell them to be themselves. When you move to a new job, you want it to be to a place that you can be yourself as you will thrive, and if a business decides that they are not for you because of this, then so be it. There are plenty more places to look in the current market. Be comfortable in how you handle yourself and be honest in all of your answers. Companies would rather take on someone that they can train and add value to, so make sure that the person meeting you knows where you think that you could improve, and where your key strengths are.
5. Accepting an offer and handing in your notice – congratulations, you smashed the interview and you have received an offer that you have accepted. Now you have to tell your current employers that you are moving on. People often make the mistake of forgetting that they may come across their previous employers in the future and when they give notice, they leave a bad taste in the mouth. Here is where you show your true mark and you should always be honest with the reasons why you are leaving so that the company can develop and stop this from happening again. Tell them why you felt unappreciated, or that you were underpaid or that the training wasn’t enough to make you as good as you wanted to be. You will often get a counteroffer, but remember, if they really appreciated you then they would have made these changes before you got to the point of leaving.
